The vines in Somerby vineyard are trained in a double guyot along wires supported by substantial end poles, a replacement cane pruning method or a single curtain. The spur pruning method is used with two permanent arms being retained from year to year. Each year, starting on January 22nd, St. Vincent’s Day, most of the previous year’s growth is removed to leave either two new canes or short spurs. These will then produce the fruiting canes on which the grapes will grow. Each cane will produce two or three bunches of grapes starting at the second or third leaf node of the cane.
